actually that was yesterday...and it was fuckin awesome!!!
band rehearsal 1-4. Due at music building at 5 so ate chicken nuggets as i jogged back to my dorm to spend 7.3 mintues changing before leaving for music building. Got gameface (temp tattoo) of yoUDee...our mascot...marched to President Roselle's house, played for his dinner party (he and his wife always have dinner parties that the band always visits briefly before everyone heads down the Tubby Raymond Field in hopefully anticipation of the Blue Hens kicking the shit out of the visiting team). then bussed down to nowhere near the field, queued up in ranks, and marched thru the tailgate party. Holy cow. It was really cute to see entire families head to toe in blue and gold/yellow, and little kids with ribbons in their hair or their faces painted. And really funny to see all the drunk people wavering around yelling 'yay marshning baaaaddddd' or 'thassh right, issa marschin band, and the delaware. go heennnssss' Then Sarv complimented the flute section (it's not that she's mean, its just that the flutes are stuck out in the badlands of the field and cannot be heard. We're not integral musially speaking. But in the parking lot she was right behind us and was like "wow you flutes know your stuff...you're in tune, together, and the music is memorized. Great job." then into stadium, stood around for ages sucking ice cubes that only one food stall was kind enough to give us for free, then pre-game. marched in, played, marched around playing, finished up, headed into stands. happily discovered that my sophomore flute buddies are good fans (read: obnoxious) as are the tubas, who we sit right in front of...so us girls and the tuba section screamed our heads off first half, which wasn't going so well.
went into parking lot to warm up, then stood off the end of the field waiting for showtime. HALFTIME *IS* GAMETIME!!!! Ran onto field screaming, jumped around, had flute huddle, played show, did pretty damn well, loved it! off field, back into stands, hung out, breathed deeply, tried to ignore sweat running down back inside my uniform. That thing is *hott* and the cape is beastly heavy on your right shoulder. Screamed hysterically third quarter at amazing ineptitude of the Hens. See, the coach apparently only told the defenseive line about what an endzone was, but he neglected to tell them to stop Lehigh from fucking getting there. Think that's bad? Well, the offensive line *really* got shafted bc not only did they not get an explanation as to what an endzone was or why it would be good to get the ball there, they also never got the talk on "playing foorball." "pass?...rush? I'm sorry I don't understand!" Then suddenly fourth quarter it must have clicked...the team watched Lehigh do it right, and monkey see, monkey do, cuz next thing, we're only down by one touchdown. Then they finish a drive...TOUCHDOWN!...with 20 seconds left in regulation...kick is good...Tie!!!! meanwhile, band is now standing at the edge of the near endzone, waiting for the game to be over so we can do postgame and get the fuck home. We've now been doing band stuff since 12.40 pm, and its 10.30 and overtime has just begun. Touchdown delaware...the kick is up...it's good! 34-27, and lehigh's turn to try for TD. lots of skirmishing, neither side playing that well, then touchdown...the entire band cringes...we're tired of standing, but cant go back into the stands...we'd prefer not to have double-overtime, but the odds of that are pretty damn good. The extra point kick...is up...is no good!!!! Delaware wins!!! 34-33 in overtime!! ::everyone left in stadium goes nuts...much diminished from the record-setting 22,537...we were losing until 4th quarter so folks started heading out...but still *many* there:: Band takes the field to do postgame, more jumping around, now mad celebrating, hugs and high fives. Do halftime show again, then run in to center to play/sing "In My Life." finally back to busses, leave after 11.30, back to dorm about midnight, shower (best thing ever... the practice field is only dust, so i was still disgusting from that, then add hours in a heavy uniform...ugh. Hung out, had some dinner/snack, went out with nextdoor neighbor, finally decided party was a sausage fest, walked down mainstreet, split a huge milkshake. back to dorm about 4, hung out with random people on floor or just getting back to it, hung out with mark, ended up falling asleep in his bed. I think i upset his roommate...*shrug* 9.6,9.11
finally up about 12.30, brunch with jessica, who told me my damn gameface was still on...i forgot it didnt wash off, and it was one of those mornings when, standing inthe bathroom staring into the mirror washing my face...i really wasnt seeing anything...dozing with my eyes open. but she had a friend with rubbing alcohol, so i got it off...water wont do shit, obviously.
now i'm sitting here, studiously not doing work...yay.
i love it here. I'm so glad i chose delaware, and even more glad i decided to try marching band here...i love it! and the thrill, the rush, of entering the stadium is incredible. There is nothing like it...and I'm addicted to it!
what an awesome night!!
